Private Realty was founded in 1988 by broker Les Gebhardt, based on the concept of a discounted commission. In 1993 David Powell left a large corporate Real Estate company to join Les at Private Realty.

Over the next few years, with just two salespeople, Private Realty became one of the highest producing independent real estate companies in Winnipeg.

David Powell has been awarded from Winnipeg Real Estate Board consecutively since 1994 for being among the top 3% of salespersons throughout the city each year. In 1997 Les retired and David took over the brokerage while maintaining both the high level of service and the low commission rate. Recognizing the high demand for these services, Powell eventually recruited additional sales associates to expand the company.

In January 2001 Powell changed the company name to Powell Property Group. It became quite necessary to absolve any confusion in the minds of the public that the company was not in any way associated with the private sale organizations that have come & gone in the city in recent years.
